What Happens During a Newborn Photography Session?

A simple, reassuring guide to what happens during a newborn photography session looks like—from arrival to final portraits.

If you’ve never been to a newborn photography session before, it’s completely normal to wonder what actually happens.

Do you need to do anything special?
What if the baby cries the whole time?
How long does it take?

The truth is, most parents are surprised by how calm and unhurried the entire experience feels.

Here’s what a typical studio newborn photography session looks like from start to finish.

A Relaxed Arrival (No Rush, No Pressure)

When you arrive at the studio, there’s no need to rush.

What happens during newborn photography sessions is intentionally slow-paced because babies run the show—not the clock.

You’ll settle in, get comfortable, and your baby will usually be fed before we begin. That first feeding helps them relax and settle into a deep sleep, which is when most of the magic happens.

The Studio Is Already Ready

One of the biggest differences between studio and lifestyle sessions is preparation.

Everything is already set up before you walk in.

The lighting is ready. The sets are prepared. The temperature is warm and comfortable. Every detail has been thoughtfully arranged so you don’t have to think about anything logistical.

You can just breathe and let the process unfold.

Baby-Led Posing (Always)

There is no forcing babies into uncomfortable positions.

Instead, posing is guided by what your baby naturally allows. Some babies love to curl tightly. Others prefer more space. Some sleep deeply the entire time. Others need more breaks.

All of it is normal.

Sessions are built around patience, gentle movement, and respecting your baby’s comfort at every step.

Plenty of Time for Feeding and Soothing

Breaks are expected.

In fact, they’re built into the session.

Whether your baby needs to be fed, changed, or just be held for a bit, we pause as often as needed. Nothing is rushed or skipped.

These pauses are part of what keeps the session calm and successful.

Capturing All the Tiny Details

While your baby is being posed and settled, we focus on the details that change so quickly.

Tiny eyelashes. Soft hands. Little lips. The way they stretch and curl without thinking.

These are the moments parents often say they wish they could freeze in time.

Parent and Family Portraits

When booking your session, we can include parent and sibling images if you’d like them.

These are usually simple, natural, and emotional—focused more on connection than the clothing.

Many families later say these become their favorite images, even more than the solo newborn portraits.

A Calm, Guided Selection Process

After your session, you’ll get to view your images and choose your favorites.

This is often the moment everything sinks in—seeing how tiny your baby was, even just a few days ago.

You’ll select your artwork or collection pieces based on what fits your home and style best.

You Don’t Need to Know Anything in Advance

One of the biggest reliefs for parents is realizing they don’t need to prepare much at all.

No posing experience. No photography knowledge. No decision-making on the spot.

Just show up with your baby and trust the process.

A Memory You’ll Be Glad You Slowed Down For

Newborns don’t stay newborns for long.

That sleepy, curled-up stage is incredibly brief, which is exactly why these sessions are so intentional.

They’re not about rushing through a checklist.

They’re about preserving a season that passes quietly—but changes everything.

At Dawn Potter Photography, every newborn session is designed to feel calm, supported, and deeply personal, so you can simply focus on your baby while the memories are gently preserved for you.
