Glowing Momma | Maple Valley Maternity Photographer

This beautiful glowing momma came in to see me right around week 35 of her pregnancy so we could take her maternity photos. Because I have recently fallen in love with the look of backlit images; especially on pregnant women, I had to get some backlit photographs of her while she was in the studio.  Something about the way the light wraps around their figures, accentuating their gorgeous bellies is truly amazing.  This momma-to-be is a friend of mine and I couldn’t wait to dress her some pretty lace and take photos of her.

With less than a month left in her pregnancy, she is absolutely stunning.  The whole ‘pregnancy glow’ thing is so real!

Froggy Pose | Head in Hands {Maple Valley newborn photographer}

Any time I have a newborn in the studio, my first and foremost priority is making sure they are safe.  There are numerous of photos circling the internet with babies hanging from branches in slings, sitting in baskets that appear to floating in water, propped up on precarious objects, etc.  Additionally, there are photographs of babies posed in positions that seem impossible for any baby to hold on their own; one of those poses being the ‘Froggy Pose’ or as some call it, the Head-in-Hands pose.

The reason many of these poses seem impossible is because they are.  Well, maybe not so much impossible, but they do require a bit of help in photoshop.  We refer to many of these images as composites.  A composite is when you take two or more elements and blend them together.  Some images are quite intricate and take several photographs, others, like the froggy pose, are usually composited from two.

Below is an image from a recent newborn session with a baby boy in the Froggy Pose.  I will show you frame by frame how the photos are taken, pulled into photoshop, and merged together to create the final composite.

It is important to note that I have been photographing newborns for several years and am quite comfortable posing newborns in the froggy pose.  In fact, it is part of my typical newborn posing flow so I’ve done it hundreds of times.  It takes practice, lots and lots of practice.  It also takes patience.  As the key to the success of the pose is all in the baby’s balance.  If the baby isn’t properly balanced to begin with, the pose won’t look polished in the end.

Step One- you will need an image supporting baby at the wristsfroggy pose composite

Step Two-  you will need an image supporting baby at the headfroggy pose composite

Step Three- You will overlap the images together in photoshop.  Reduce the opacity of the top layer and line the two images up.  Depending on baby’s movement during the pose, you’ll want to make adjustments accordingly.  It is important to line up all the areas that you will be erasing!  In the example below, you can see that anything above the squiggly line needs to line up as I will be erasing that part of the image.

Step Four – I then complete the editing of the image.  Color, skin, etc.

Baby Boy Keeghan | 4 days fresh {Maple Valley | Seattle area newborn photographer}

I posted a model call a few weeks ago looking for a newborn under 12 days.  I was hoping to get a response from someone with a baby under 10 days.  I totally lucked out when a friend of mine (also a photographer) shared my status with a mom who was getting ready to have her baby boy in just a few days. When Keeghan’s mom emailed me and told me he would be 4 days old on the day of my model call, I knew he would be absolutely perfect. And when I laid my eyes on him for the first time, I fell in love!  This little guy was not only absolutely to-die-for gorgeous, he was the most sound little sleeper.  Weighing in at right around 7 lbs, he was a tiny little bundle of squishiness with a full head of dark hair! I spent just under two hours photographing this little man but I seriously could have gone longer.  I don’t think he cried even once during his whole session!   We worked through several different poses and I got some great images of him for mom!  This little guy was the perfect model; I could not have asked for anyone better! Here are just a few images from his session.  Check out this little rock star and be sure to show him some love! baby girl Kennedy | 12 days new {Maple Valley | Seattle newborn photographer}

Baby girl, Kennedy came in to see me for her photo session just before she turned 2 weeks old.  Her mom and dad were referred to me from a previous client and had called about a model casting call that I had posted on Facebook.  Unfortunately, she was going to be just a tad too old to participate in the model call so I rearranged my schedule and made it a point to fit her in as soon as I could.  And let me tell you, I am so glad I did!

I love babies… I mean I LOVE BABIES!  I’m not exaggerating when I say that Kennedy was the most adorable little baby girl.  Weighing right around 7.5 lbs with perfect dainty features and flawless skin.  She had a full head of hair and the most piercing bright blue eyes!  I snapped so many great images of her that I had a tough time narrowing down the selection for mom and dad.  I like to spend the first half of the session photographing baby by themselves and wrap up the session with family photos; a total of 2-3 hours usually.  This little girl was a rockstar and made it through the entire photo shoot in less than 2 hours.  Say hello to this beautiful family!

Baby Boy Lochlan | 8 days old {Maple Valley | Seattle Newborn Photographer}

This sweet little baby boy was a much awaited for little man.  Momma was anxious to meet him and of course, he made her wait!  I had photographed his momma’s maternity session about a month and a half before and we captured some beautiful images of her outside in the park.  You can see mom’s maternity session here- //www.dawnpotterphotography.com/gorgeous-momma-to-be-maple-valley-seattle-maternity-photographer

When he finally showed up, he was stunning and momma was glowing.  They say that pregnant women have a glow about them, but there’s something the glow of LOVE from meeting your new baby boy for the first time truly is magical!  This family has a lot of love for their newest little one.

Little Lochlan wasn’t interested in sleeping during his newborn session.  Although he was alert and awake for most of it, he was also calm and relaxed.  At one point, he flashed the most gorgeous little smile!  I’m so happy I was able to capture it with my camera because it certainly is one of my favorite images from his session.
